Signs About Breast Cancer

When it comes to cancers, women have to be vigilant about what is going on with their bodies. Amidst the most common forms of the malady is that of breast cancer. While it claims thousands of lives annually, it can be detected early, treated, and in many instances completely eradicated. Women today should be aware of how to detect for these cells, as there are some ways to figure out whether or not something is awry. Aside from that, a little bit of prevention may help keep cancerous cells from forming, and can help with healing down the line.

Self-Testing

The first thing that women can do is focus on self-testing. This is a solution that involves pushing and feeling the breast tissue all over. The goal is to press against the tissue to feel for lumps or cells that seem compacted. Even a small lump can be something to deal with. When this is found, do not wait to see a specialist, as it could very well be something to worry about. A doctor can focus on whether or not this is an impacted duct,

All About A Healthy Balance Diet

It has become common knowledge that obesity is a problem in North America. The newspapers, magazines, television commercials and internet banners all acknowledge the issue. It is not uncommon to see advertisements encouraging membership in diet programs where you can lose those extra pounds in a short time. Marketers have even responded by providing 90-100 calorie pre-packaged snacks ranging from almonds to cookies. Others are telling us to walk it off, and some are encouraging the latest fad diet. It seems that everywhere we look there is someone, somewhere trying to fix our personal weight problem.

Is obesity an issue?

Yes, in more ways than we can imagine. It is not simply a matter of having extra weight. Being overweight or obese triggers many health related situations.

Obese Canadians are 4 times more likely to have diabetes, 3.3 times more likely to have high blood pressure and 56% more likely to have heart disease than those that have healthy weights (1). Throughout North America there are reports relating obesity to heart disease, and diabetes. There are other symptoms that are often ignored by the media but are also troubling. I personally know a lady who experienced severe pain in her feet. The extra

All About Exercise During Cancer Treatment

Exercising is an important component to a healthy lifestyle but it doesn’t only have preventative powers. Staying physically active after you’ve been diagnosed with cancer and even during cancer treatment can enhance physical well being, reduce the side-effects of treatment, and spur recovery.

Research Supports Exercise

According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), research has not found any harmful effects on cancer patients who engage in moderate exercise. Quite the contrary, it has found that cancer patients who exercised regularly had 40 to 50 percent less fatigue, one of the most common, and most complained about, side effects during cancer treatment. Another side effect that may accompany cancer treatment is feelings of depression, which can also be relieved by exercise, which elevates mood.

Regular physical activity increases general conditioning, joint flexibility, and muscle strength, as well as improves cardiovascular function and protects bones. Many of these things can be impaired by surgery and some therapies. The better physical shape you are in, the better you can recover from treatments like surgery.

Finally, studies have demonstrated that gaining weight during and/or after treatment increases the risk of cancer recurrence, especially for prostate, colon, and breast cancers. Maintaining an exercise routine maintains a healthy

When Your Health Care In Crisis

With all the shouting going on about America’s health care crisis, many are probably finding it difficult to concentrate, much less understand the cause of the problems confronting us. I find myself dismayed at the tone of the discussion (though I understand it—people are scared) as well as bemused that anyone would presume themselves sufficiently qualified to know how to best improve our health care system simply because they’ve encountered it, when people who’ve spent entire careers studying it (and I don’t mean politicians) aren’t sure what to do themselves.

Albert Einstein is reputed to have said that if he had an hour to save the world he’d spend 55 minutes defining the problem and only 5 minutes solving it. Our health care system is far more complex than most who are offering solutions admit or recognize, and unless we focus most of our efforts on defining its problems and thoroughly understanding their causes, any changes we make are just likely to make them worse as they are better.

Though I’ve worked in the American health care system as a physician since 1992 and have seven year’s worth of experience as an administrative director of primary care, I don’t consider myself qualified

How To Survive Breast Cancer

My grandmother had breast cancer 22 years ago. She gets checked every year to make sure it hasn’t come back. Less than 6 months her breast cancer came back in her lungs and duodenum and it was stage 4. She was in the hospital for a few weeks, very sick.

They tried a mild chemo treatment and it put her in the hospital. She was too weak for the treatment she wasn’t eating and she was not trying. They decided she couldn’t handle the chemo treatment.

If you have a loved one in the same situation, make sure they eat even if you have to feed them. It is so important.

Hospice was called in. I stayed with her every weekend.

She required a lot of help. She could not get up on her own. She could not feed herself. She couldn’t wipe herself. It was only 2 months, if that, that she went downhill so fast. All we could do was make her comfortable. Make sure she knew that is was okay for her to go.

My grandmother was always the classy type. She always dressed up really nice. Her dignity was going little by little. Something she never would have wanted. My mom

Sign of Spinal Subluxation

The vertebral subluxation is caused due to improper position or motion of the spinal bones that upset the nerve communication between the body and the brain. The spinal subluxation is a response to stress. The misalignment of the spine could occur due to a number of reasons and its impact generally varies from person to person. Symptoms of this condition can range from mild to severe and from spasms in the muscles to chafed adjacent nerves.

These are some of the most common symptoms of spinal subluxation.

Aching Back And Neck

Pain in the neck and back are the most common symptoms of this condition. The pain generally shoots up in the neck or back and at times patients can experience pain in one or both areas. The severity of the pain tends to vary considerably, with some patients experiencing mild pain while others experiencing excruciating pain and total debilitation. If you often experience pain in the back or neck then you should consider consulting an orthopaedic or chiropractic doctor.

Inability To Move Around

This is yet another common signal of spinal subluxation. The pain caused by misalignment of the vertebrae could make it extremely problematic to move for the patient. It is common for

Why Movement of Spine is Importance

Yep, your spine is incredible, alright. Designed to allow for optimal mobility while still protecting your central nervous system, your amazing back bone is nothing short of a biological masterpiece! But it can only survive with your help.

Back pain will affect around 80% of us at some point during our lives; and lower back pain accounts for more lost hours than any other type of occupational injury. So the human spine tends to get a lot of stick! But a lot of the time, it’s our habits that are to blame for our back issues; and more specifically, how we tend to neglect the needs of our spines.

The problem is that we don’t always use our spines in the way that nature intended. Poor postures, prolonged sitting and inactivity are behaviours that our spines absolutely hate! And they throw these bad habits right back in our faces in the form of back pain.

Your spine is made up of 33 bones stacked on top of one another. The 4 bones of the coccyx are fused, as are the 4 bones of the sacrum. In between all of the other bones have two little joints called facet joints. These joints facilitate movement

Between Disc Replacement and Spinal Fusion

Back pain is one of the most common health problems people have to face at one point or another in their lives. It is estimated that about 75% of the world’s population will experience lower-back pain at one point in their lives. While most people use different types of medications to alleviate their pain, some need to get under the knife to get rid of their back complications. Back surgery is considered to be a big deal as it is not only very complex, but can also take a minimum of 3 to 4 hours or more to complete. It is only recommended if a person finds it difficult to perform daily tasks and has chronic pain despite getting non-invasive treatment.

There are two types of back surgeries that your doctor may prescribe, namely – artificial disc replacement (ADR) and spinal fusion. While both are advanced ways of treating back pain, both have their own disadvantages. Although you will be given a thorough explanation on both those types of surgeries and the decision of opting for any one of them will lie with you – it is still very important to listen to what your doctor has to say.

The Gonstead System of Chiropractic

Dr Clarence S Gonstead developed his system the Gonstead System over many years. He used results and repetition to guide the systems development.

A key principle he put forward and developed was the ‘level foundation’ principle which is paralleled in the engineering industry. It revolves around the fact that the pelvis (Ilium and sacrum) forms a ring structure that supports the spinal column. This ‘foundation’ if unlevel or tilted away from a ‘normal’ position sets the vertebral column into a compensatory deviation. This is to try and return the eyes to a horizontal plane because this is a normal compensation that is required for ambulation and erect posture.

The pelvis

The pelvic girdle consists of the left and right Ilium. They are joined at the front (pubic symphysis) by a flexible joint called a diastasis joint. The rear of both Ilium is separated by the sacrum which is an inverted triangular bone and is joined to each Ilium by a diarthrosis joint called the Sacroiliac joint or SI for short.

The SI joint put simply has an L-shape and the bottom part of the joint allows mostly a pivoting movement where the top part allows a small amount of gliding

Things You Should Do Before Sleep For Better Vision Health

One of the major factors that contributes to good health is the amount of quality sleep we get on a day to day basis. According to the National Sleep Foundation Americans are getting less than 6 hours of sleep a day. Getting a good night’s sleep determines our energy levels, work productivity and our ability to concentrate and focus on tasks related to work, school and other activities. But more importantly, a lack of sleep affects the most important sense we rely on to perform all of these activities; our precious eyesight.

A lack of sleep can have a negative effect on your eye health and usually causes eye problems related to dry eyes, eye fatigue and light sensitivity. According to health experts the body requires at least 7-8 hours of sleep a day. This is necessary for us to wake up refreshed and rejuvenated so that we can face the day’s activities. Therefore, what can you do to get an adequate amount of sleep so that you improve the quality of your eye health and general health as well? Here is a natural solution that you can put into practice to get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis.

Keep Your Better Vision With Diet

A common vision complaint that optometrists receive frequently is a vision condition called Presbyopia. If you have Presbyopia you are able to see distant objects clearly while nearby objects appear blurry to you. This particular vision condition affects people who are age 40 and older. Here are some of the causes of presbyopia as well as the risk factors that are associated with this vision condition:

One of the major risk factors for this vision condition is cigarette smoking. This is due to the fact that smoking can cause a restriction of blood circulation to the blood vessels of the eyes that leads to vision problems associated with presbyopia. Poor diet is also another contributing factor for this vision condition. For example, a diet that is high in sugar can have a negative effect on the visual system. This causes the eye lens to swell; a negative change in the eyes that leads to blurry vision associated with this eye problem.

Due to the fact that there is a link between good heart health and good vision health it is helpful to do the necessary things that you need to do to keep your blood pressure levels in the normal range. This

All About Astigmatism

One of the common vision conditions that Americans are suffering from is called Astigmatism. Astigmatism is defined as a vision condition whereby a person’s vision becomes blurry at all distances. While this may seem like a debilitating vision disorder there are steps that you can take in order to correct this vision problem. Eye exercises can reduce the symptoms associated with this vision condition. This is due to the fact that Astigmatism is a vision disorder that optometrists refer to as a refractive vision error problem. Refractive error refers to a certain category of vision conditions that are defined as the inability of the eyes to focus light so that it falls directly on the retina.

Eye exercises are remedies for a series of refractive error vision conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and also astigmatism. In the case of astigmatism the eye has an irregular shape. Instead of being shaped like a baseball the eye is shaped like a football. Due to the irregular shape of the cornea the eyes are unable to bend light properly so that light rays focus both in front of the retina and also behind of the retina. In order for us to see clearly light

Guide To Choose Proper Shoe Insoles

You may be a fan of outdoor activities and enjoy being engaged in activities which keep you on your feet for long periods of time. But due to some physical conditions there may be pain caused which hinders your ability to stay lead the active lifestyle you desire. There may be various reasons causing discomfort but there are many insoles which provide relief to such painful conditions and sometime provide therapeutic benefits. There are various types of shoe inserts which range from arch support insoles to heel inserts but choosing the right support is key to getting the relief you need.

Types Of Shoe Insoles

Firstly, there are comfort insoles which have shock-absorbing properties designed to provide relief when standing or walking on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time. The sizes range from full length, ¾ length, or separate arch or heel inserts. Most basic types of discomfort generally find relief with this variety but if the pain still persists it would be ideal to consider support type insoles. Understanding Pediatric Orthotics

In this branch of medicine, orthotics deals with the use and manufacturing of orthotic devices that are used to correct the patient’s physical function and posture. Orthotics medicine serves to minimize pain, maximize mobility and function, and prevent the progression of most physical abnormalities. In the branch of pediatric orthotics it is any type of device like a brace or heel or foot insert that will help to assist a child’s limb. These devices are made to correct imperfections that affect the child’s lower legs, feet, or knees. There are many different conditions that can affect a child’s feet that may make it necessary to use pediatric orthotics. These can include multiple sclerosis, flat feet, or partial paralysis.

Many times if a child has plantar fasciitis pediatric orthotics are used to help support their foot. Plantar fasciitis is a medical condition that creates pain in their feet, usually their heels. When the heel insert is put inside their shoe it helps reduce any inflammation that often occurs with this medical condition and provides extra cushioning. The inserts can also help to lessen heel pain, which can be reoccurring. This type of device is called plantar fasciitis orthotics. Some children with this

Foot Issue for Runners

Running is an excellent way to get exercise, and improve your overall health, and is an enjoyable activity in many seasons, but it is also hard on your feet if you’re not running properly or wearing the right shoes.

Today we are going to talk about Metatarsalgia (met-uh-tahr-SAL-juh) the ball of your foot becomes painful and inflamed, a common injury from overuse. No matter how hard you try to stay active and healthy, you may still have problems. Knowing the warning signs is the key to getting ahead of any issues.

Metatarsals are the five long bones that run from your arch to your toes. When you push off the ground, your body weight is transferred to your metatarsals, one solid set of shock absorbers. If the weight is distributed unevenly due to a tight Achilles heel or calluses they can cause the metatarsals to become inflamed and irritated. The worst of the worst that can happen with Metatarsalgia is you may need a callus shaved, a different insert or metatarsal pad, or orthotics. It can lead to joint swelling, bone bruising, chronic stiffness, and lost range of motion, so it’s best to start treatment sooner than later.
